The explosion led to the deaths of two residents: seven-year-old Archie York, who died at the scene, and 35-year-old Jason Laws, whose body was later found amid the rubble. Police investigations quickly pointed to a suspected cannabis operation, and all three men arrested now face two counts of manslaughter in addition to charges related to the production of cannabis, a Class B drug in the UK. They remain in police custody as investigations continue.

Detective Chief Inspector Katie Smith, who is leading the inquiry for Northumbria Police, described the incident as “truly tragic” and extended her condolences to the affected families. She emphasized that the investigation remains active as authorities work to uncover the cause of the explosion. “We would continue to ask people to avoid speculation surrounding this incident both online and in the community,” DCI Smith urged, calling on anyone with information to come forward to assist with the investigation.

In the wake of Archie York’s passing, his grieving parents, Katherine and Robbie, paid an emotional tribute to their son. Describing Archie as a “cheeky” and vibrant presence who “lit up every room he went in,” they shared their deep heartbreak and reflected on the joy Archie brought to their lives. “He might have been small, but he had a heart of gold, everyone loved him,” they said. The family recently held a balloon release in Archie’s honor, an event filled with community support and heartfelt tributes.

Archie’s aunt, Abbie Lauren, also shared her sorrow on social media, writing, “My family are all so truly devastated and heartbroken beyond words… Archie was my nephew and the most beautiful, funny, & caring little boy and his name deserves to be shouted from the rooftops!”

The explosion has left the community in shock, with many mourning the loss of two beloved individuals and questioning how this tragedy occurred. Northumbria Police continue their work to establish the cause of the explosion and ensure justice for Archie and Jason, as well as safety for the residents of Benwell.
