A new sequel to the Planet of the Apes franchise is about to add new scope to its expansions, following the storyline launched by Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Its latest installment, now streaming in May 2024, is a foundation for a new trilogy that is able to set up a post-Caesar world filled with intense battles between intelligent apes and humans.
Director Wes Ball, who worked on the reboot, previewed that new movies will focus on the growth of the main character, Noa, whose story was only a glimpse into the previous film. Ball says Noa’s growth will define what has to happen in this next chapter as indicated by an epic battle involving humans, the Eagle Clan, and Caesar’s legacy.
The creative team of the franchise has already sketched out ideas for multiple installments. Ball noted that if the second film is a success, it would naturally lead into a third movie to complete a trilogy that explores deeper moral complexities and power struggles within this sci-fi universe.
Despite having to work with the continued strikes in the industries, the production team seems to be optimistic about hitting the release timeline for 2027. The fact that the film is now a franchise under Disney and 20th Century Studios promises that the upcoming film will deliver some high-stakes storytelling that builds up from the success that the reboot has gotten.
Fans will witness even more world-building, and then there are hints that maybe the other films would take a cosmic approach, possibly joining that storyline with the original Planet of the Apes films of the 1960s. The continued relatability of the franchise comes from mixing high-tech visual effects with clever storylines talking about survival, loyalty, and evolving.
