It has been known to cause everything from very mild and even severe respiratory illnesses, including “walking pneumonia.” This increase in infections, however, has experts at the healthcare authority concerned because it can affect a person’s seriously if their immune system is weak and when such an infection strikes one having a pre-existing condition.
The bacteria Mycoplasma pneumoniae was first identified in the 1940s as a cause of community-acquired pneumonia. Historically, the infection has presented itself in cyclical outbreaks every 4 to 7 years. The latest surge comes as experts warn of post-pandemic respiratory vulnerabilities.
