UK Braces for Storm Bert’s Fury
Storm Bert is set to batter the UK with heavy snow, fierce winds, and torrential rain this weekend. The Met Office has issued amber health alerts across England as temperatures drop and weather warnings intensify. Commuters are urged to prepare for travel chaos and the risk of flooding.
Widespread Disruption Ahead
Heavy snow and strong winds, reaching up to 70 mph, are forecasted to lash northern England, Scotland, and parts of Wales. In the south-west, rainfall could exceed 100mm, while rapid snowmelt threatens widespread flooding.
Dan Holley, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, warned: “Rapid melting of lying snow, coupled with strong winds, will intensify impacts. Travel disruption and flooding are likely.”
Drivers are being told to stick to main roads and prepare for potential breakdowns. National Rail has also cautioned passengers of four days of disruption, with snow and ice causing delays and cancellations.
Freezing Temperatures Add to Woes
Earlier this week, temperatures plunged to -7.5°C in parts of the UK, leaving roads and railways icy and hazardous. The cold snap will persist into Saturday, with heavy snowfall blanketing parts of the West Midlands, Yorkshire, and Scotland.
In addition to the freezing temperatures, heavy rain will follow on Sunday, causing further risks of flooding. A yellow weather warning for rain and snow has been issued between 4 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday.
Health Risks and Amber Alerts Issued
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has declared amber health alerts, urging vulnerable individuals to take precautions. The elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions are most at risk from the extreme weather.
Travel experts are advising people to delay non-essential journeys and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles. With snow expected to linger through Saturday, conditions are unlikely to improve until early next week.
What to Expect This Weekend
- Saturday: Heavy snowfall in the north and midlands; strong winds in Scotland and northern England.
- Sunday: Rapid thaw in the north-west and north-east; flooding risks in low-lying areas.
- South-west England: Torrential rain exceeding 100mm could cause localized flooding.
Prepare for the Worst
Storm Bert brings a potent mix of snow, rain, and wind, posing risks to life and property. Officials are urging the public to remain cautious, monitor weather updates, and avoid unnecessary travel.
Stay safe by following local alerts and preparing for severe conditions over the weekend.
