The fashion world has been left stunned with the untimely death of its brightest star, Rohit Bal, who died of a heart attack at age 63. Known for his innovative designs and being able to blend traditional elements of Indian aesthetics with that of modern times, he was an Indian fashion leader. His death marks the end of an era in that field, leaving an empty hole in an industry in which he had given more than three decades. And since the news spread all around the world, there has been a sea of tributes pouring from around the globe to pay homage to the genius that was Bal’s, who left such an impact on fashion.
He is born in Kashmir; the self-taught designer who rose to stardom in the late 1980s. He started a small boutique in Delhi, and soon gained attention, as he had something totally new to offer: not just uniqueness but how he would paint the clothes with minute yet fantastic embroidery, luxurious fabrics, rich as they were, coupled with a synergy of modern silhouettes and strong Indian motifs. In creating him one of the nation’s most-respected designers by having been true to his intent in preserving the best of India’s heritage yet bold in its execution, Bal made him respect by all for his marvelous art.

His hallmark collections would feature Indian cultural texture in haute couture with fabulous peacock motifs; on this count, exquisite Lehengas and hand-painted sherwani collection go by the elegance and grandeur to that point which work was marked with a big mark. His designs were not just mere garments but a form of art that brought forth India’s rich history in the midst of the fashion world of today. “Rohit Bal changed Indian fashion, made it relevant to the world without losing its soul,” opined fashion critic Meera Kapoor.

Bal was one of the first Indian designers to be noticed internationally, whose designs appeared in many of the most significant fashion shows in New York, Paris, and London. He played a vital role in putting Indian fashion on the world map and people even called him “India’s Master of Fabric and Fantasy.” Bal’s shows were often dramatic spectacles where his designs were celebrated for their beauty and innovation. Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford have trod the catwalk in Bal’s creations, emphasizing his influence and respect in the industry.

It wasn’t limited to merely showing off in the fashion world; he was showing off with some of the major brands across the globe with the likes of Christian Louboutin. Some of his collections were favourites at Lakmé Fashion Week and India Couture Week; and he was constantly one of the trendsetters for the young designer crowd. Rohit Bal took Indian fashion to such great heights that only a few have reached those heights. His dedication and artistry will be written down in history as the perfect inspiration for generations yet to come.

A Colorful Personal Life

Rohit Bal was known for his larger-than-life personality. His life was as colorful as his designs, and friends and colleagues described him as passionate, outspoken, and fiercely committed to his work. Every piece of his artistry reflected his love for life. Bal also had his share of challenges, though, including health issues in recent years that slowed down his career. All this notwithstanding, he remained adamant in his love for fashion and went on to design with a ferocity that characterized the beginning years of his work.

The fashion industry was saddened at the loss of Bal. His close friend and fellow designer, Manish Malhotra, put together his feelings in just the words, “Rohit was not only a designer; he was a visionary who brought Indian fashion to the world stage. His absence is irreplaceable.” The industry has poured out its grief because of what he brought into the lives of the people he knew and the legacy that followed him.
