NYC Marathon 2024 Begins

As the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon gets underway, defending champions Tamirat Tola and Hellen Obiri are chasing history. Both runners aim to become the first repeat winners in nearly a decade, facing off against elite competition and heightened environmental focus.

NYC Marathon Returns with High Stakes and Heated Competition

The New York City Marathon, one of the world’s premier races, is unfolding today with defending champions Tamirat Tola and Hellen Obiri vying to retain their titles. Each athlete faces a challenging field packed with past champions and Olympic medalists who are eager to take the top spots. In addition to intense competition, this year’s marathon incorporates new sustainability initiatives, bringing environmental issues into the spotlight.

“It was not easy to win New York,” remarked Tola, reflecting on his record-setting performance last year. “I also compete to win, so I know I’m up for the task.”

Tola Chasing a Rare Double Victory

Tamirat Tola, last year’s NYC Marathon winner and course record-holder, is set on joining an elite club. Should he triumph today, he would become the second runner ever to secure both an Olympic gold and the NYC Marathon title in the same year, matching the feat achieved by Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya in 2021. To defend his title, Tola must beat a competitive field that includes top marathoners Geoffrey Kamworor, Albert Korir, and Evans Chebet—all of whom have clinched past NYC victories.

Belgium’s Bashir Abdi, fresh off a silver medal win at the Paris Olympics, adds to the lineup, making Tola’s path to victory even more challenging. Leading the American contingent are Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, who secured top-ten finishes in Paris. Both are eager to make a mark on home soil.

Obiri’s Bid for Back-to-Back Titles

Kenya’s Hellen Obiri, aiming to be the first woman since Mary Keitany to win consecutive New York marathons, faces a formidable challenge. “Winning back-to-back is what I’m looking forward to,” she declared. With a bronze medal from the Paris Olympics and last year’s NYC Marathon win under her belt, Obiri is positioned as a top contender.

Her competition includes Sharon Lokedi, the 2022 champion, and Edna Kiplagat, who claimed victory in 2010. American runners Dakotah Popehn and Jenny Simpson also have their sights set on strong performances, with Popehn stating her goal to be the “top American” in the women’s division.

“I keep calling this my encore tour,” Popehn joked, reflecting on her recent marriage and renewed motivation. “When I’m having fun, I race my best.”

Wheelchair Racers Lead Off

Swiss marathon legends Marcel Hug and Manuela Schär headline the wheelchair race division. Hug, undefeated this year, including his victory at the Paris Paralympics, looks to extend his winning streak. Both he and Schär are vying to secure their tenth NYC Marathon win, cementing their places in the race’s storied history.

New Sustainability Initiative: “Team for Climate”

For the first time, the New York Road Runners, the nonprofit behind the marathon, has introduced a “Team for Climate” initiative. Participants were allowed entry by donating $3,000 for carbon credits, an option designed to encourage eco-conscious participation. With recent temperatures in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit (20s Celsius), race day’s anticipated drop to the 50s (around 10°C) promises ideal conditions for runners.

In a continued effort to make the marathon experience memorable, the New York Road Runners partnered with local arts organizations, offering runners discounts to Broadway shows and museum admissions. This initiative not only enriches the marathon experience but also promotes New York’s cultural scene.

Race Schedule and Start Times

The marathon follows a 26.2-mile route across New York’s five boroughs, beginning on Staten Island and ending in Central Park. Here’s a breakdown of start times for today’s race:

Tension Rises with Top Athletes and Title Hopes

This year’s TCS New York City Marathon brings together past champions, Olympic medalists, and top American talent all eager to secure or defend their titles. For Tola and Obiri, the stakes are high, with each striving to make history as back-to-back champions in one of the sport’s most prestigious events.

As these world-class athletes take to the streets, the city will watch intently, celebrating endurance, perseverance, and the spirit of competition that has defined this iconic race since 1970.
