Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell Friday defended previous comments in which he implicitly criticized former President Donald Trump over the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, saying Trump’s behavior was “disgraceful” at the time. Today, however, McConnell emphasizes Republican unity with Trump running the top of the 2024 race for the GOP presidential nomination.
McConnell’s recent stance of supporting Trump, on the other hand, is more of a strategic shift, especially focusing on shared goals so that they could achieve Republican control of the Senate and the White House. That makes the choice complicated in terms of political pragmatism and lingering party differences.
