A severe crash on the M6 motorway in Lancashire has led to a full closure in both directions, creating significant travel delays and causing major disruption. The accident occurred when a lorry overturned, struck the central reservation, and landed on the opposite carriageway, where it collided with the back of a car.

The motorway closure affects both directions between Junction 33, near Lancaster, and Junction 32, near Preston. According to Lancashire Police, the crash took place around 11:20 GMT, and emergency responders, including an air ambulance, are currently at the scene.

National Highways and Lancashire Police have reported substantial delays. Southbound drivers on the M6 are experiencing delays of at least an hour, while northbound traffic faces delays of approximately 30 minutes. National Highways stated that southbound delays between Junctions 35 and 33 are expected to add at least 60 minutes to travel times, while northbound delays between Junctions 31A and 32 are adding roughly 30 minutes.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Lancashire Police advised: “The motorway is currently closed in both directions while emergency services deal with the incident. We will release further information when we are in a position to do so.”

With the road expected to remain closed for several hours, drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and anticipate extended travel times. Emergency services are working diligently to manage the situation, and further updates are expected as the incident develops.
