Israel Knesset Prioritizes Judicial Reforms, Settlements, and Security

Knesset in Israel approved a few very controversial legislations, attracting worldwide rebukes.

In fact, they relate to UNRWA-United Nations Relief and Works Agency that is seen severely restricting its operations not only within the borders of Israel but also in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. In short, new legislation comes at a perfect time in keeping with strategies espoused by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding curtailment of the influence exercised by bodies internationally seen on the side of Palestinians.

This has elicited much criticism and condemnation from many nations, not only the United States but also most European states, which claim that ending UNRWA’s programs would only worsen the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank. In this scenario, the Netanyahu government has maintained that there was a need for the curbs to restrain UNRWA’s role in conflict perpetuation.

It takes place in even more general moves inside the Knesset and, more precisely, for a rather tense winter session over controversial judicial reforms alongside intense national budget debates as well as other debates on possibly forcing stronger settlement policies while various actions towards Palestinian townships will also be argued over.

The legislation, however, has a tendency to complicate diplomatic relationships and heightens tensions within the region. Netanyahu’s government has given justification for the measures under the grounds of national security and stability, while others argue that they could continue to isolate Israel on the international stage.

What are the Knesset’s next legislative priorities?

The Knesset’s next legislative priorities are centered on a few contentious areas that reflect ongoing political, economic, and security challenges.

1. Judicial Reform and Budget Battles

The Knesset is expected to revisit judicial reforms, which have been at the center of political debate, with efforts to alter the balance of power between the judiciary and the government. These reforms remain highly divisive and have sparked mass protests in recent months. The coalition government, led by Netanyahu, is also focusing on budget negotiations. Ultra-Orthodox parties are pressuring the government to push through budget provisions favoring exemptions from military service for Haredi citizens, a contentious issue that could impact government stability.

2. Settlement Expansion and Palestinian Policies

The government is likely to prioritize legislation that supports settlement expansion in the West Bank and Gaza. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has advocated for increasing the number of settlements, which has drawn international condemnation for potentially undermining future peace negotiations. The Knesset will also discuss policies restricting Palestinian access to legal recourse in Israel’s High Court, further escalating tensions between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

3. Security Measures and UNRWA Restrictions

The recent bills restricting UNRWA’s operations are part of a broader strategy to limit foreign influence. The government aims to cement these policies, possibly through additional security measures targeting organizations operating within Gaza and the West Bank. This focus is tied to ongoing military operations and attempts to maintain national security amid heightened regional tensions

4. Diplomatic Initiatives and Military Funding

The government is also weighing increased military spending to support operations against regional threats from groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Netanyahu has expressed intentions to pursue further diplomatic normalization agreements with Arab countries, a continuation of the Abraham Accords, although tensions with Iran complicate these effort.

These legislative priorities reflect the government’s attempt to balance domestic demands with regional security concerns, though they may deepen divisions within Israeli society and further strain international relations.
