Hurricane Oscar Near Hispaniola; Nadine Hits Belize

October 19, 2024: The Atlantic is steaming along, not with one but two simultaneous developments. Hurricane Oscar has rapidly intensified over the past few hours and has hung out like a threat for high winds and heavy rainfall in that region of the Caribbean. Tropical Storm Nadine has come ashore near Belize City, Belize, with localized flooding and interruption.

Hurricane Oscar Intensifies Near Hispaniola
Oscar, which had been a tropical storm, has now intensified into a hurricane. Currently, the storm is situated near the island of Hispaniola, the storm has already attained maximum sustained winds at 80 mph (130 km/h), and brings dangerous weather to parts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Key Impacts:
Heavy precipitation of 6 to 10 inches (150-250 mm), and even higher in isolated areas, will occur. This will bring about a threat of flash flooding and landslides over mountains.
Tropical storm-force winds are expected along both coasts of Hispaniola, although hurricane-force winds are still possible along the northwestern parts of the Dominican Republic.
The storm will also interfere with travel, especially air traffic, and accordingly, both Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata airports issued alerts.
Oscar is forecast to track northwest, and storm forecasters believe that it may continue to strengthen more during the next couple of days off the warm waters of the Atlantic.

Flood Issues:
Flooding streets and minor landslides have been reported in several communities, including Belize City and Dangriga. The emergency services are put under high alert, and residents are urged to avoid low-lying areas and unnecessary traveling.
The Belize Weather Service warns that 8 to 12 inches (200-300 mm) of rainfall could accumulate, triggering flash floods, especially near rivers and coastal areas.
Schools and businesses in affected areas have closed temporarily as authorities work to assess damage and ensure public safety.
What’s Next?
Both systems reach the peak of activity for the Atlantic hurricane season. Those in the affected areas should stay informed and keep an eye on any updates from local officials. Hurricane Oscar may intensify through the next 48 hours, but by its later track, suggests that it will not make landfall after its passes over Hispaniola.
