Emmanuel Macron has sparked controversy about the founding of Israel

French President Emmanuel Macron has managed to tread on one horn of controversy following his statement on the establishment of Israel that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described as “historically untrue. Publicly, Macron claimed that Israel was “created by a decision of the United Nations.” Netanyahu questioned the statement, which he termed a “distortion of history, pointing out that it is instead the connection Jews have had to the land for millennia rather than the 1947 UN partition plan that constitutes Israel’s existence.

Macron’s comments, which were made at a time when tensions are ongoing between Israel and Hezbollah, have come under severe condemnation, further straining the Franco-Israeli relationship. Netanyahu, son of historian Benzion Netanyahu, said Israel was not born in the UN but in the blood of people who gave up their lives during the state’s establishment. Damage control was seized as Macron’s office emphasized France’s long-time friendship with Israel despite this diplomatic row as well over a comment and previously over discussions about an arms embargo.

This pertains to continuously ongoing political sensitivities about stories of history, notably within the context of the current geopolitical struggle at play in the region.
