Johnson Urges Bold Action for Ukraine’s Future
Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has proposed a $500 billion loan to Ukraine and called for a clear timeline for the country’s NATO membership. He believes these actions are essential to end the war and secure Ukraine’s place in the global order.
Marking the upcoming 1,000th day since Russia’s invasion, Johnson stressed the urgency of decisive measures to bolster Ukraine’s security and economy.
$500 Billion Loan for Ukraine’s Victory
Johnson’s plan centers on a lend-lease style loan of $500 billion. He argued that Ukraine needs this financial lifeline to sustain and win the ongoing conflict.
“This financial firepower will allow Ukraine to survive and triumph,” he said, expressing confidence in Ukraine’s ability to repay the loan.
Johnson emphasized the loan’s importance alongside military aid, urging countries like the UK and France to provide Storm Shadow and SCALP cruise missiles. He argued that NATO allies must match US actions, such as the recent approval for Ukraine’s use of ATACMS missiles against Russian bases.
NATO Membership Date: A Message to Putin
Johnson also pushed for the announcement of a NATO membership date for Ukraine. He insisted this would send a clear signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin, reinforcing that the invasion was a catastrophic mistake.
“Ukraine needs the security guarantees that NATO membership provides,” Johnson said. He believes this step would deter further aggression and affirm Ukraine’s rightful place in the global community.
EU Criticized for Slow Support
While Johnson called for bold measures, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell admitted delays in supporting Ukraine. On 18 November, Borrell criticized the EU’s sluggish decision-making regarding military and energy assistance.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged European leaders to commemorate the 1,000th day of Ukraine’s resistance with new aid packages. These measures, Sybiha stressed, are vital for maintaining Ukraine’s resilience.
Biden’s Approval of ATACMS Applauded
Johnson welcomed US President Joe Biden’s approval of ATACMS missiles for Ukraine, highlighting the significance of this decision in countering Russian aggression. He called on NATO allies to align their support with the US by providing advanced weaponry to Ukraine.
He also underlined the need for sustained international commitment, stating that actions like these demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine against Russia’s full-scale aggression.
A Call for Courage and Logic
Boris Johnson’s proposal combines financial aid, military support, and NATO integration to ensure Ukraine’s success. His appeal comes at a critical moment, as the war approaches 1,000 days with no clear resolution.
By urging bold steps, Johnson hopes to convince the global community that Ukraine’s sovereignty and security are non-negotiable. As international leaders weigh their options, Johnson’s plan serves as a call to action against tyranny and aggression.
