BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canisius High School is deeply saddened by the passing of Kevon Walker, a recent graduate and former football standout who left a lasting impact on the school and its community. Walker, who graduated in June and went on to attend Saint Francis University in Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly, leaving a void felt by all who knew him.
Known for his prowess on the field and his warm, engaging personality, Walker was celebrated by both teammates and faculty. “Kevon was a larger-than-life presence in so many ways in our building,” shared Principal Tom Coppola in a heartfelt Facebook post. “His graduation from Canisius High School was such a great day for he and his family, it was awesome on that day to see him so proud. Our deepest condolences go out to his family.”
Just this past September, Walker returned to Canisius to support his former team, lending encouragement and advice in the locker room and on the sidelines—a testament to his dedication to the school and its community. Head Football Coach Kraig Kurzanski and Principal Coppola gathered with current players to share the heartbreaking news, with counselors available to support students grappling with the loss.
Saint Francis University, where Walker was a freshman, is also mourning. Classes were canceled on Tuesday to allow students to gather in remembrance at a special mass. James Downer, Saint Francis University’s Director of Athletics, expressed the collective grief, saying, “The entirety of the department is heartbroken over the tragic and untimely loss of Kevon. Although his time at Saint Francis was short, he made a positive impact on the football program, was well-liked and respected among the team, and showed the promise of a very bright future with the Red Flash.”
The cause of Walker’s death remains under investigation, according to NBC affiliate WJAC in Pennsylvania. The news of his passing has resonated deeply both at Canisius and Saint Francis, where he is remembered for his bright spirit, his talent, and his commitment to those around him.
