A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) dual-cab ute, aiming to challenge market leaders like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux. With a starting price of AUD $57,900 before on-road costs, the Shark 6 offers a blend of power, technology, and sustainability, becoming the first PHEV ute in Australia.
The Shark 6 is equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with two electric motors—one on each axle—providing 321kW of combined output and 650Nm of torque. This all-wheel-drive system ensures excellent traction for both urban and off-road environments. The ute’s 29.58kWh battery supports an electric-only range of up to 80km, ideal for short commutes.
While the Shark 6 offers smooth on-road performance with coil-sprung suspension for improved comfort, it trades off some towing capability compared to competitors. It has a 2,500kg braked towing capacity and a 790kg payload limit, slightly lower than diesel rivals like the Ford Ranger. However, its vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology allows users to power appliances directly from the battery, enhancing its versatility for camping or job sites.
Inside, the Shark 6 boasts a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The cabin offers a premium feel with reclining rear seats and advanced features such as a 50W wireless phone charger and multiple USB ports. The Dynaudio sound system with 12 speakers further enhances the driving experience, making it feel more like a luxury SUV than a typical ute.
The ute supports AC charging up to 7kW and DC fast charging at 55kW, allowing a 30% to 80% charge in about 25 minutes. When operating as a hybrid, the Shark 6 boasts 2.0L/100km fuel efficiency, though consumption rises during extended use of the petrol engine
With its cutting-edge technology and competitive pricing, the 2025 BYD Shark 6 is positioned to attract buyers seeking sustainable alternatives in the ute market. It combines eco-friendly features with utility, though some compromises in towing capacity may impact its appeal among heavy-duty users.
