What Cuba is also facing is an intensifying energy crisis as parts of the economy shut down due to severe power shortages. Blackouts are now commonplace, some for periods of over 24 hours, and both residents and industries will face hours of darkness. The generation deficit reached more than 1,000 megawatts in several instances, adding more pressure to the country’s National Electric System (SEN).
Breakdowns in key power plants, particularly at Mariel and Santa Cruz, combined with undefined delays in maintaining their condition, have also exacerbated the crisis; the lack of fuel at power plants only adds to the problem. Officials warn that the situation in the near term offers little hope for improvement, so the public and businesses need to steel themselves for further disruptions.
Many Cubans have taken their frustration to social media by suing the government for not managing the area better, with allegedly selective areas that have electricity. Cuba remains uncertain since officials search for solutions to stabilize the national grid and get things back to normalcy.
