463 Vehicles Stolen in Mississauga and Brampton Over 31 Days

Local police reported that 463 vehicles were stolen within Mississauga and Brampton in just 31 days. The rapid rate of the thefts has residents and law enforcement calling for more vigilance and security.

Organized Crime Suspected

The Peel Region Police say they believe that the thefts are being staged and managed by organized crime rings, with many of the stolen cars shipping overseas or dismantling for parts. They add among the main targets that some primary targets have been upscale models like pickup trucks and SUVs.

These thefts seem to be very organized and are part of a bigger trend seen across the GTA, said a spokesperson with Peel Police. Its officers work in collaboration with other national and international agencies to trace the vehicles that have been stolen and disturb the criminal networks behind such thefts.

Targeted Vehicles and Methods

Authorities say the thieves have been using technology to defeat security systems such as using signal boosters to amplify key fob signals emanating from inside homes. That allows the thieves to unlock and start the vehicles without actually possessing the keys.

Police urged residents to take additional precautions, including keeping key fobs in a signal-blocking pouch, parking in a garage if possible, or employing a steering wheel lock or vehicle tracking system.

Community Impact and Response

This wave of crime has left some residents frustrated and concerned for safety. An official said there seems to be growing police pressure on Brampton and Mississauga, two of Ontario’s most populous cities, as more people report thefts.

People are afraid to leave their cars parked overnight, even in their driveways,” said one Brampton resident whose SUV was recently stolen.

Peel Police have increased patrols in these neighbourhoods and work with car dealerships and manufacturers in raising awareness and offering anti-theft advice. A police hotline has also been established for residents to report any suspicious activity.

A Growing Issue Across the GTA

It’s not just confined to Mississauga and Brampton; it really is part of the whole Greater Toronto Area problem. There are indications auto theft has generally increased in the region over the last year and thieves have gotten more brazen.

Police investigations have continued and invited whoever may possess information about the thefts to share it with them. “Community cooperation is fundamental to helping find a solution to this problem,” Peel Police underscored.

More Preventive Measures

Meanwhile, local insurance companies are encouraging clients to install anti-theft devices in their vehicles, hinting that the current auto theft incidents might drive up premiums. Others have organized neighborhood watch programs in their neighborhoods to help thwart criminal activities and pass on any suspicious activity.

While Peel Police continued to ramp up its efforts against the theft epidemic, residents can only hope the wave of stolen vehicles will eventually subside.
